When wondering where america went …
It dawned on us that now would be the perfect time to look for her!
Between the ages of Trump and Obama. Between “Make America Great Again” and “Yes, We Can.” Before we inaugurated “46.”
We want to find America again. Many people think she is lost, and they may be right when seen from the perspective of our badly divided electorate today. America has been distracted before, but never for long.
The America we have in my mind, which experience tells us is a mainstream perspective, remembers:
A rag-tag team of independent-minded citizens who determinedly pushed the British back across the ocean during the closing days of the American Revolution yet later embraced His Majesty’s United Kingdom in its own greatest hour of need during the darkest days of World War II.
The same America that spurred the Industrial Revolution, civil rights for all our citizens, and placed footsteps on the moon in the name of all humankind.
A nation that did not define itself in tones of red and blue but rather by degrees of compassion, progress, collaboration, and respect.
A global leader who engaged rather than disparaged, who was embraced rather than divided, whether by class or faith.
A country where past leaders' echoes reverberated in our schools' halls - from Washington to Reagan, from Rockefeller to King, from Mays to Mantle.
An America that is solid and secure, welcoming and nurturing, peaceful and forceful, visionary and mindful.
One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Thomas is Looking for America.
It is time to find her again. To celebrate her legacy and heritage, as well as her experience and history.
And in doing so, through these pages, we hope to bring you the stories of who the United States of America was, who we are, and who we hope to be in the centuries ahead - and why.
Our dedication to “Life, “Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” to unfettered American democracy is unyielding! As it should be.
